This novel traces the relationship between a German lawyer, Michael and an older woman, Hanna. Beginning with their brief affair in post-war Germany, the book goes on to Michaels discovery that Hanna had been a guard attached to a satellite camp at Auschwitz, a crime for which she is imprisoned.
